Last Wednesday night I ventured out to take my first Dabble class: Self-reflexology for Stress Relief. I had no idea what to expect. I thought we’d learn a few special pressure points, some techniques for relieving headaches and such, and then I’d be on my way. I guess I thought it would be inconsequential, just a random and different experience to write about. Umm nope. Guys, I was blown away by how much I got out of this class…
I’ll admit, this has to be one of the weirder things I’ve done since starting my Be Creative project… and when I heard I was the ONLY ONE that signed up, it officially became the weirdest thing I’ve done so far.* Guys, I was miles from my comfort zone… I couldn’t even see my comfort zone anymore. This meant I couldn’t just hide in the back of the class and take notes (and by notes I mean instagrams). BUT I set out this month to have more diverse experiences. This was my opportunity to embrace that wholeheartedly… or pretend I was sick, or maybe my car had a flat tire, you don’t know! It could! But I didn’t make up any excuses. I went and I’m SO glad I did.
So what did I learn? Reflexology is the gateway into the world of internal healing. Our entire body is mirrored in our feet. So certain parts of the foot correspond with certain parts of the body. Applying pressure to specific points in our feet can promote relaxation + health in corresponding body parts. Through reflexology, we essentially help the body heal itself. SO interesting. Places on your feet where you have calluses, stiffness, soreness, pain – any of that is an indication of places in the body where we need some extra lurve.
Paying attention to our bodies and dealing with our stress and pain can literally save our lives. We are presented with stressful situations everyday, we’ll never be completely free from it. So we have to deal with it, it can’t be ignored. If you’re like me and don’t really want to run 5 miles everyday to relieve stress, start massaging those feets. Even if you’re skeptical, who doesn’t like a foot massage?
I not only learned some invaluable information about the reality of stress and the importance of dealing with it, but the entire class resonated with me and the path I’m on right now. It felt a bit serendipitous, a little coincidental… and you know what Deepak says about this: “Coincidences are not accidents but signals from the universe which can guide us toward our true destiny.” Whaaaaat. Awesome.
Maybe my sheer determination to “figure it all out” is drawing these experiences to me…
I posted recently about feeling the need to turn within and reassess my blogging goals. This class really reiterated the importance of seeking information and guidance internally vs. externally. We’re taught to always seek help from external sources for basically every problem we have. Because of this we start to think we can’t find a solution within ourselves. Well that’s just not true. Seeking guidance from external sources can work, sure, but you’ll often only find temporary solutions.
Whether you want to improve your health, your creativity, or your overall well-being, your body and mind can help you find an answer. Following your gut, your intuition, taking a break if you need to, starting a 12 month project devoted to creativity because you feel a pull from within to do so… our bodies are always communicating with us and if we can learn to listen (and disregard the ego’s two cents), we can rule the world. Okay, we can rule our own world and fill it with anything and everything we want… and that sounds pretty rad.
