Happy First Friday

Phew, finally Friday is here… and it’s not just any Friday. It’s First Friday! Arty folks rejoice! For those of you unfamiliar with First Friday, it’s when many galleries and museums around town open their doors and give you booze. Basically. Sometimes there’s music and what not, but mostly it’s just a big party with drinks… oh and art. Sounds fun, eh?

Will you be partaking in First Friday? I’d love to hear where you’re goin! Happy Friday, friends!

The Art Date

There’s nothing like a lazy afternoon spent wandering through town, happy hour patio-drinking, and gallery hopping… This weekend I’d love to go to these 3 places, and by “I’d love to” I mean “I will” and by “I” I mean “myself and the boyfriend.” Oh he might try to negotiate out of this, but that’s where the patio-drinking comes in handy. Who can say no to drinking outside on a nice day? Answer: no one.

The Art Date, Stop 1:

Untitled at the Denver Art Museum, April 27, 6pm. Scavenger hunt in the museum? I can scavenge. Sign me up.

The Art Date, Stop 2:

Ice Cube Gallery, Marius Lehene and Ray Tomasso, Opening Reception, April 27, 6 – 9pm. Spend an evening with three-dimensional works about the construction of identity and crazy colorful sculptures? Okee.

The Art Date, Stop 3:

The New CPAC (Colorado Photographic Arts Center), Punk Passage: California and Beyond + Mining Denver’s Rock Photography, March 29 – May 12, 2012. You know how I feel about punk rock and art colliding. I’m there.

Sheena is Still a Punk Rocker

Despite what you may have heard, punk rock is alive and well. At least right now at the MCA Denver with the show Bruce Conner and the Primal Scene of Punk Rock. The exhibition includes a selection of Bruce Conner photos, videos of punk rock and other performances, an “installation” of flyers from the Goteblud archive, documentation of primal scream therapy, and works by Martin Kersels, Miranda July, and Rodney Graham. And oh so much more…

My 13-year-old self would have loooooved this exhibit. Punk rock and art colliding? I would have been in heaven. Let me paint you a little picture of myself at 13: dyed black hair (which goes great with my extremely fair skin tone), high top Dr. Martens boots, Ramones purse (which was stolen at a party and I didn’t hesitate for a second to buy another one). I was pretty hardcore, or as hardcore as one can be in the suburbs of Denver… who got A’s in school and never dated. Ok so I wasn’t very punk. But I liked the music and the scene, even though I wasn’t really a part of it. I guess watching Rock ‘n’ Roll High School in my parents’ living room doesn’t quite make me punk.

I think what I loved most about the punk scene was the eff you attitude, the I’ll-do-whatever-I-want-ness of it all. And I think it’s because I wasn’t like that… you know, in a way the MCA is a little punk. That’s right, they use staples and play music and put Courtney Love’s eulogy to Kurt Cobain in giant type on the gallery wall. They’ve got some attitude… and I like it.

Plus they have an awesome rooftop with pigeons.

Until next time MCA…

Major Art Crush

Last Wednesday night at the Denver Art Museum, who happened to be giving a lecture? Well only one of the best artists EVER, Tucker Nichols.

I’ve never laughed so much at an art lecture. That’s right, actual laughter in a museum auditorium, everyone. Tucker Nichols’ work is that incredible combination of clever, conceptual, and aesthetically pleasing that does not come around often. Not to mention he’s completely genuine and unpretentious. His work is a reminder to everyone: art is supposed to be fun.

My art crush was already a strong 9. But when I learned he made everyone special tiny notebooks for the lecture? Art crush: 10.

This is the actual size of the notebook. Too frickin cute. Yes, that’s the professional art term for it.

P.S. his Anonymous Postcard project is genius… and hilarious. You can’t beat that.

* Remember, an art crush is not a crush on the artist, but merely an unusually strong admiration for their work.

Arts + Eats

It’s always the same: cheese, crackers, wine, beer… big yawn. Gallery and museum openings, while full of good things to look at, are often lacking good things to eat. If I had it my way, I’d pair the artwork with food or drink that matches accordingly…

Playin’ in the Sprinkler by Jason Bergsieker || chocolate brigadeiros

Musing on Museums

Okay, I confess – I narrowly avoided the temptation to write “mewsing.” These kittens have some provocative thoughts on ivory towers and institutions… and a dark sense of humor!
